Malta To Welcome British Royals In October For Independence Anniversary Celebration

Malta Bulletin Avatar

The Maltese government has announced that the country will celebrate a significant milestone – 60 years of independence from British colonial rule – with a royal visit from its former colonial master.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward and Sophie, will arrive in Malta on October 7th and stay until October 10th to mark this momentous occasion. Notably, Prince Edward is the youngest brother of King Charles III and was conferred the title of Duke of Edinburgh by his brother in March last year, following his marriage to Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones in 1999.

The upcoming visit was revealed in a joint statement issued by the Maltese government and the British High Commission in Malta on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. This royal visit serves as a poignant reminder of the nation’s journey towards independence, which was achieved on September 21, 1964, when Malta officially gained sovereignty from Britain. The 60th anniversary of this historic event will be commemorated on September 21, setting the stage for the Duke and Duchess’s visit later that week.
