De Battista informed in a Facebook post on Thursday that he will be stepping down as a CEO of the Labour Party after holding the position for five years.

He said that he will assist in ensuring a seamless transition during this time. De Battista also shared this intention with party leader and prime minister Robert Abela.

These were five years during which my work as CEO involved ensuring prudent management of the Party’s finances and properties. During these five years, we took important and unprecedented decisions regarding the Party’s financial sustainability. Long-term decisions guided by prudence, leaving a legacy that can be enjoyed for many years to come”,said De Battista in his post.

He thanked his co-workers, The Leader and Administration, and volunteers, including the people working in the Party’s subsidiary companies.

After a poor outcome in the MEP election two months prior, De Battista had made hints that he intended to stay in the role, amidst rumors of a potential departure from him.

This came after Daniel Micallef, the deputy leader of Labour, announced his own resignation. The position will be filled when the party meets for its annual general conference in September.

Former party secretary-general Jason Micallef first put his name forward for deputy leader, but after speaking with MEP Alex Agius Saliba and Robert Abela, he took his nomination down. The latter may end up serving as the party’s deputy leader in the future.

The Labour Party said in a statement that Micallef had been designated as a “special delegate” to supervise the execution of its election manifesto following his withdrawal of his candidacy.

There have been further notable resignations from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Labour Party. Abela’s advisor Aleander Balzan resigned last week, and Ronald Vassallo, the party’s head of communications, also submitted his resignation. Nevertheless, Balzan will stay in his position until the September conference.
