Katryna Esposito

Katryna Esposito, 23, the first Maltese athlete debut in the -48kg class at the Olympics loses to Mongolian judoka Bavuudorjiin Baasankhüü on last Saturday.

Esposito’s tactics led Baasankhuu into two consecutive infringements despite the stiff challenge, almost producing an upset. But Baasankhuu’s expertise won out as she managed to secure a second wazari, triumphing via ippon, and ultimately taking home a silver medal.

Coach Fleisz comments

Aurelian Ciprian Fleisz, Esposito’s coach, expressed his pride and satisfaction with her performance.“We leave today with our head held high, but with a broken soul. We end these Games with honour, hoping it brings good things for both judo and sport in Malta. I am proud of Katryna, of her involvement both today and throughout the qualification process. Fighting the current world champion was an honour. This defeat will fuel and motivate her, bringing future success.”

Fleisz’s remarks were supported by The Maltese Olympic Committee, highlighting Esposito’s perseverance and technical prowess as a significant turning point for Malta.
