Malta Introduces New Assessment for Hidden Disabilities People with hidden disabilities, such as fibromyalgia, ME, and autism, will now be eligible for state support thanks to a new assessment criteria based on the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Previously, these conditions were not recognized for disability benefits.
A new interdisciplinary board, set up by AÄ¡enzija Sapport, will conduct assessments to determine the level of support needed. Applicants can submit their applications online, accompanied by medical certificates from their specialist doctor.
This reform, unveiled by Ministers Michael Falzon and Julia Farrugia Portelli, aims to provide hope and justice for those who suffered in silence. Malta is aligning itself with the UN Convention for the Rights of Persons with a Disability by adopting the WHO assessment method.The new system will become operational on September 2, bringing social justice and support to hundreds of individuals who were previously disadvantaged due to their disability.
