Malta Bulletin Avatar

Malta and Gozo are poised to become a premier faith tourism destination, leveraging their rich spiritual heritage of over 360 churches and sacred sites. The Malta Tourism Authority has launched a targeted campaign with Aleteia, the world’s largest Catholic online publisher, to attract pilgrims and faith-seeking travellers. This initiative kicks off with a grand pilgrimage in September, organised by Magnificat Pilgrimages, featuring prayer, sacred site visits, and lectures by renowned experts, including Pierre-Marie Varennes, founder of Magnificat magazine.

Participants will celebrate mass at Ta’ Liesse church in Valletta with Bishop Joseph Galea Curmi, enjoy exclusive commentary on Caravaggio’s Beheading of John The Baptist at St John’s Co-Cathedral, and visit iconic sites such as Mosta Basilica, Rabat parish, St Paul’s Grotto, and Wignacourt Museum. Additional stops include the St Paul and St Agatha catacombs, the Mellieħa National Marian Shrine, and the Madonna Ta’ Pinu Shrine in Gozo. Distinguished pilgrimage members include Mgr. Benoist de Sinety, Fleur Nabert, and Prof. Bernadette Mélois.

This unique experience combines spirituality, art, and history to showcase Malta’s profound Catholic heritage. With its stunning architecture, breathtaking landscapes, and deep-rooted faith, Malta invites travelers to embark on a spiritual journey that nourishes both body and soul. By highlighting its sacred sites and traditions, Malta aims to attract pilgrims seeking meaningful travel experiences and strengthen its position as a leading faith tourism destination.

The pilgrimage will also delve into Malta’s rich history, exploring the islands’ role as a bastion of Christianity during the Knights of St. John’s rule. Participants will discover the vibrant cultural tapestry woven by centuries of faith, art, and architecture. From the intricate stone carvings to the majestic church facades, every detail tells a story of devotion and resilience. Malta’s faith tourism initiative promises an unforgettable experience, blending spiritual enrichment with cultural exploration. As the islands prepare to welcome pilgrims from around the world, they stand ready to share their timeless treasures and inspire a deeper connection with the divine.
