The EUR 40,000 contribution guarantees the rights to move Mgarr’s Santa Marija statue. The annual “bidding war” is an established tradition in Mgarr and is held every year near the church, in the middle of Mgarr village. It draws many spectators. A contribution of 40,200 euros has been given to Mgarr’s Santa Marija statue for the coming celebration. The annual “bidding war” is an established tradition in Mgarr that is held annually near the church, in the middle of the village.

The event draws thousands of people to watch. This custom, which started in 1923, one year following the acquisition of the village’s statue, was created when the village received many requests for carrying the statue on the parade. To address this issue, the parish decided that those who gave the largest contribution would receive the privilege of being the ones to carry the statue.

It is limited to Mgarr residents. The amount that was donated to support the statue’s construction was around EUR 15,000. The most expensive donation was $46,000, which was made in 2022 in celebration of the century’s birthday.
