A recent court ruling has resulted in two companies being awarded a total of €427,000 in compensation for damages caused by a severe storm that hit Malta in 2003. The storm, which brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, resulted in significant damage to properties and infrastructure across the island. The two companies, which had suffered damage to their properties and equipment, had filed a lawsuit against the government, claiming that the stormwater channel in Qormi had not been properly maintained, leading to the flooding and damage.

The National Court’s ruling found in favor of the two companies, concluding that government entities had indeed failed to maintain the Qormi stormwater channel, which had contributed to the flooding and damage caused by the storm. The court’s decision highlights the importance of proper maintenance and upkeep of infrastructure, particularly in areas prone to severe weather events. The ruling also serves as a reminder of the need for government entities to take responsibility for their actions and to provide adequate compensation to those affected by their negligence.
