European Parliament President Roberta Metsola welcomed UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Brussels on Wednesday, marking the first visit by a British leader to the EU institutions since Brexit. Metsola emphasized the need for a “new chapter” in EU-UK relations, built on existing agreements, trust, and friendship.
During their meeting, Starmer and Metsola discussed strengthening cooperation between the EU and UK based on the Withdrawal Agreement, including the Windsor Framework, and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement. Metsola stressed the importance of protecting the rights of nearly six million EU citizens residing in the UK, an issue particularly significant to the European Parliament.
Starmer, who has promised a “reset” with the European Union since taking office in July, reiterated his commitment to pragmatic leadership and a stable relationship. He met with European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized the need for closer cooperation amid uncertain times. Von der Leyen encouraged exploring opportunities for cooperation while ensuring faithful implementation of withdrawal agreements.
Starmer, who voted Remain in the 2016 referendum, has insisted that his reset will not mean reversing Brexit, a politically sensitive topic in the UK. Instead, he aims to make Brexit work, focusing on sensible leadership and cooperation with the EU. This visit marks a significant step towards improving EU-UK relations, with both sides seeking a positive and stable partnership.
