Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia will continue to test its new Oreshnik hypersonic missile in combat and has a stockpile ready for use . This comes after Russia launched an Oreshnik missile on the city of Dnipro in Ukraine, marking the latest escalation of hostilities in the ongoing war. Putin met with Defense Ministry officials and weapons makers to congratulate them on what he called a successful test .
According to Putin, Russia will also begin serial production of the new experimental weapon, which is capable of reaching targets across Europe, making it more effective than some high-precision weapons of a longer range . The Russian president has lowered the threshold for using Moscow’s nuclear arsenal, as Ukraine has been using US-supplied ATACMS missiles to strike Russia .
The situation has sparked concerns about the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Western partners providing air-defense systems, including US-made Patriot batteries, to Ukraine despite initial hesitation . Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stated that his defense minister is meeting with partners to discuss new systems that can protect against new risks .
