Nationalist Party MPs have proposed a bill aimed at combating workplace bullying, which would require companies to establish a policy that clearly defines bullying and outlines the consequences for such behavior. This policy would provide a framework for employees to report incidents of bullying and for employers to investigate and address these incidents .

The proposed bill is a significant step towards creating a safer and more respectful work environment. Workplace bullying is a pervasive issue that affects millions of employees worldwide, causing significant emotional distress, anxiety, and depression. In fact, research suggests that 15% of the UK workforce has experienced bullying at work, resulting in estimated costs of over £28 billion to UK businesses each year .

The bill’s proposal to introduce a statutory definition of workplace bullying is particularly noteworthy. Currently, there is no legal definition of bullying, making it challenging for employees to seek recourse and for employers to address the issue effectively. By establishing a clear definition, the bill aims to provide a framework for employers to prevent and address bullying, and for employees to seek justice .

The proposed legislation would also require employers to establish a Respect at Work Code, which would set minimum standards for positive and respectful work environments. This code would provide guidance on how employers should deal with perpetrators who continue to bully, and would empower employers to challenge and bring about change .

Overall, the proposed bill is a welcome step towards addressing the pervasive issue of workplace bullying. By providing a framework for employers to prevent and address bullying, and for employees to seek justice, the bill has the potential to create a safer, more respectful, and more productive work environment.
