As a consequence of the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, also known as Brexit, Maltese travelers will soon be required to obtain a permit to enter the UK. Starting from April 2, citizens of Malta, along with other EU nationals, will need to possess an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to their arrival in the UK. This new requirement marks a significant change in travel regulations between the UK and EU countries, and is a direct result of the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

The introduction of the ETA scheme is part of the UK’s efforts to strengthen its border controls and immigration policies post-Brexit. The system is designed to enhance national security and improve the efficiency of the UK’s border management processes. Under the new regulations, EU citizens, including Maltese travelers, will need to apply for an ETA online ahead of their trip to the UK. The application process is expected to be relatively straightforward, with most applicants receiving a decision within a short period of time.

The requirement for an ETA will apply to all EU citizens traveling to the UK for tourism, business, or other non-immigration purposes. The permit will be valid for multiple entries over a period of several years, making it a relatively convenient process for frequent travelers. However, it is essential for Maltese travelers to be aware of this new requirement and to apply for an ETA in advance of their trip to avoid any potential disruptions or delays.

The introduction of the ETA scheme is just one of the many changes that have resulted from the UK’s departure from the EU. As the UK continues to develop its new immigration policies and border control systems, travelers from EU countries, including Malta, will need to stay informed about the latest requirements and regulations to ensure smooth and hassle-free travel to the UK.
